Lets Talk About: GLOBAL FACTION.

Since 2006 Global Faction have been on top of new, politically informed underground hip hop from Britain.

I found their channel about Two Years ago, and thanks to them I’m up on a lot of UK talent I wouldn’t have found otherwise. It’s always a gem when you find a new channel to delve into; and Global Faction has been one of the few I’ve regularly checked up on and waited with excitement for new videos to drop. Aside from a massive respect I’ve got for them for introducing me to Triple Darkness ( hands down the tightest and most socially important crew outside of anything High Focus IMO ), Global Faction has always been high in my estimation cuz they’ve got ethics; something you can’t really say too many music platforms display these days. They always promote positive knowledge that wouldn’t otherwise have a voice. Staying close to what Hip Hop was founded as, the purpose it began with. Everything they put out is socially relevant, refreshingly different, or just straight fuckin dope.

Here’s the artists they turned me on to:

LOWKEY:

I miss his input. He decided to end his musical career last year; “After many months of contemplation, I have decided to step away from music and concentrate on my studies. Maybe at some point I will get back into it again but at this stage, I feel I should direct my energy in different, more helpful directions.”

The public speaking he engaged in while releasing music was always interesting, and the two albums he dropped are both lyrically diverse and topically engaging.

‘Dear Listener’ suffered slightly musically from a loada falsetto chipmunk vocals on the beats, but was still miles ahead most of the content comin outta the capital at the time.

‘Soundtrack To The Struggle’ elevated him even further, rapping with more style, bigger production and heavy guests from all over the map.

 CYCLONIOUS:

Check out ‘Warrior & Blacksmith’ with 42nd Chamber, and the ‘Montu Arts’ mixtape. Conscious hip hop at it’s best.

MELANIN 9: M9 has been dropping nothin but solid mixtapes and deep albums for years, his latest; ‘Magna Carta’ is non stop fire from end to end.

He comes on strong, and serious, but when you overstand his message you can see why.

Check out his ‘Orions Stencil’ mixtape, ‘White Noize’ with Orphans Of Kush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cys62Je81D4 , and ‘High Fidelity’ for his earlier stuff.

Then ‘The 144,000’ for some newer shit, with production from Beat Butcha and Chemo and guest bars from big names.

CYRUS MALACHI: Make sure you got enough money to buy books once you check him out.

All those schools ‘making learning FUN’ should transfer their yearly budget to his bank account and let him school the youth.

You might need a historical perspective to truly appreciate the complexities of his bars, but any fan of hip hop’s guna be well into his work. ‘Ancient Future’ is a classic. His new album ‘Black Athena’ ( the title of which is based on the books by Martin Bernal ) is still growing on me; It’s been out a few months now but its so deep it takes a while to digest all the shit he’s sayin!

‘Animal Circus’  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqdoJIJLp0g

As soon as I heard ‘hip hop’s become a slipknot’ I was 100% in.

LOGIC: His ‘True Talk’ tape with Last Resort had some big tunes on it,

and the ‘Academiks’ tape with Big Cakes was on point all the way.

Cop it for free here: http://logicpeoplesarmy.bandcamp.com/album/academiks

‘For My People’ was the song that made me really start paying attention to him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugAakqxRTgY

AKALA: He’s been killing mics for years now.

If you don’t know about his fire in the booth parts, F64’s and Daily Duppy go find em on youtube immediately!

His new album ‘The Thieves Banquet’ is his best yet; ‘Maangamizi’ and ‘A Game Named Life’ are standouts; along with the top two vids linked below.

His voice, both musically and politically is always relevant, well researched and honest.

The BEATS RHYMES & REVOLUTION live sessions are def one of the highlights of the channel.

Big Cakes handles the intro, Kwake comes with a strong beat, DJ Snuff cuts up a sample or two, and the MC goes off over the top.

The simple, live band format instantly sets these vids a level above the countless freestyles on youtube. The amount of hours I’ve spent tryin to hear someones bars through British wind ravaging bad camera mics, or over the engine of the car they’re playin the beat through; it’s nice to be able to chill and hear some UK shit clearly over some smooth beats!

Some picks from the BRR sessions:

Skriblah from Terra Firma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVeKtY8Euec

Big Cakes himself, spittin over the ‘Accordion’ Madlib beat. ‘She’s not your bitch young man, she’s your wife’!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcJlA6afYtI

Tesla’s Ghost never comes less than hard as fuck! over another madlib beat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRvzOW5CMbM

‘This Is Black History’ ft Jody Mcintyre, Logic, Big Ben, Jaja Soze, Big Cakes, Genesis Elijah, MC D, Cerose, Big Frizzle, Wordplay, Haze ( reading off his phone hah) U.S.G, Rodney P, and Akala.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCEU3VH9TNw
